"The Committee "Entertain""
Our Committee Members
Members of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society were very pleasantly "entertained" by their Committee at the afternoon meeting on 10th January.
The President, Alex Magowan, opened the proceedings with a fascinating display of "Turtles". Stamps, Miniature sheets, Postcards - showed different varieties, life history etc.
Dr Brian Dow presented a memorable display stamps, covers, postmarks of the varied sports featured in the Winter Olympics held in 1994 at Lillehammer, Norway.
Elsie Miller, with stamps and covers, illustrated the interesting story of Dr Albert Schweitzer who went out to French Equatorial Africa and founded a Leprosy Hospital (originally a hen house!) there.
Caroline Watt presented a wonderfully varied display of colourful postcards Animals; Ships; Still life; Fashion; Flowers and Fruit; Babies etc
Robert Watts display was an inspiring one Irish Writers W.B.Yeats; Jonathan Swift; Oscar Wilde; James Joyce. Then a move to French Writers Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas.
Terry Woods gave a historic display showing the changing postmark of Blantyre - and High Blantyre - through the years - also views of Blantyre Post Office in its ever changing venues.
Bobby Forrest presented a display of memorable Covers showing members of the crew of the RMS Titanic also stamps, postmarks and newspaper cuttings telling of the disaster of 15th April, 1912.
Bobby Forrest gave a further display this of the Pitcairn Islands stamps and covers issued through the years and also illustrating the story of the "Bounty".
Andy Napier told the history of locally printed stamps issued 1870 by the Fiji Times Express newspaper. In 1871, the official Post Office opened and stamps printed bearing the CR monogram King of Fiji.
David Brown expressed thanks to all for presenting most interesting and varied displays.
Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 24th January 2025, at at 1.30pm when Dr Brian Dow will present his display, "Blood Transfusion".
Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
