3 members travelled, or should I say splashed, to Dundee on 14th March & presented 4 diverse displays to our hosts.

Andy Napier, Graham U'ren & Alan Rushworth

First up was a display, sent by Terry Woods, on Jamaica. He'd started this (side) collection as a result of a holiday there in 1995 & showed us covers, & stamps, with readable postmarks which showed a "tour" of the island. These included some of the smaller town & villages of the island. he concluded with some postcards & photos of Post Offices to be found.

Graham displayed part of his flightless birds on stamps collection, starting with a general overview of the 63 living flightless species of which 59 appear on stamps, and several extinct species. He introduced them in 5 categories – terror birds, ratites (such as ostriches, emus and kiwis), penguins, flightless rails and others. He then showed a detailed study of the unusual flightless Kagu from New Caledonia, which is the nation’s emblem, first included in the design of New Caledonia definitive stamps in 1903 in the form of overprints. The display included these and all seven definitive issues since 1985, in which the Kagu has been the sole subject and for which design competitions have been held.

Alan Rushworth took us "Doon the Watter" with cards, photos & cancellations from the many destinations, Clyde Steamers & mention of the around 200 shipyards to be found in & around the Firth of Clyde. He concluded his display with some steamers found on the Firth of Forth.....as far upriver as Stirling and a cover with a Tay Bridge cancel (very appropriate).

Andy Napier told the story of the very short lived FAM19 air route operated by Pan American Airways which commenced in November 1941. With covers, from Fiji, to the various destinations (Noumea, Auckland, Canton Island, Honolulu, The USA & even to GB) he showed the route, cancels, various censor, and dual censor, marks along with variations of the cachet. He concluded by giving a brief resume of the plane's repatriation flight to the USA following the flight's termination at Auckland on only its third round trip (the result of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on 6 December 1941) just one month after the route commenced.

All 4 displays were very warmly appreciated by our hosts who thanked us, in the usual manner, for both travelling to Dundee (on a less than pleasant, weatherwise, evening) & for our displays.
