Lanarkshire Philatelic Society
"Places I have lived"
Mr. Alan Rushworth
"Places I Have Lived" was the title of the display at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society Friday afternoon (11th).
This was presented by Alan Rushworth who informed all that ,so far through the years of his life he has stayed in 23 different homes – and so he took members on a journey beginning from his first home in
Tollcross (Glasgow) followed, after three months, with a new family home in Govanhill. He presented artefacts of his life there – Identity Card, Ration Book, Clothing Book – and a card relating
to his time in the Boys’ Brigade in Candlish Church, Cathcart Road, Glasgow. Throughout this he displayed historic postcards of the Govanhill, Queens Park, Cathcart areas of Glasgow.
A move to East Kilbride brought a view of his Certificate of Apprenticeship; and his Diploma as Technical Teacher from Jordanhill College. This was followed by a wonderful array of historic postcards of East
Kilbride Village – and then the development of the new town – "welly (Wellington) boots were a necessity!" Postcards were viewed of the building of the different phases of the town centre.
Historic postcards were displayed of Calderwood Glen; Carmunnock; Crossford; Blackwood; Kirkfieldbank; Cathcart, Muirend; Langside; Shawlands; Battlefield. Also covers and postmarks –
reflecting the various moves made.
Throughout the display, covers, postmarks etc relating to events of the time were shown: 1999 Opening of the Scottish Parliament; 2014 – the Scottish Referendum – along with signatures of various
officials concerned; A postcard showing both George Orwell and Hairmyres Hospital commemorated his stay there - he was admitted on Christmas Eve 1947 suffering from a sever bout of TB – and stayed for
seven months.
Postcards relating to the opening of the Garrion Bridge in 2002. And a cover for the "last day of posting" at Kirkfieldbank (Post Ofice) on 4th May, 2006 was also presented.
Vice President Robert Watt expressed thanks to Alan Rushworth for presenting a most informative talk of his life of moves, and showing a fantastic display of historic postcards.
Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is next Friday, 18th October 2024, at 1:30pm when members will present displays on the theme of "Postcards".
Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
