"Christmas & other topics"

Our Members

It was a variable response to the theme at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society meeting on Friday afternoon .(15th) The theme was "Christmas". There were displays of Christmas stamps from Fiji; from Saar; from Britain; and from "Around the world". Other displays featured Benham Christmas covers; Greetings Stamp booklets; Carols and also Christmas slogans on covers.

More unusual was the display of the "12 Days of Christmas" featuring birds demonstrating the characteristics of each of the 12 Days; Christmas Mail by Balloon Post; Beautiful embroidered Christmas cards of WW1; and Postcards issued for Christmas.

These were displayed by - Andy Napier, Walter Simpson, Murray Touche, Albert Tong, Bobby Forrest, Elsie Miller, Robert Watt, Graham U’ren, George Jamieson, Caroline Watt and Gordon Shepherd.

Other displays did not follow the theme but presented an interesting variety  of ideas. Lovely  stamps issued by Scottish Islands – including Pabay, Eigg, Flannan, Rona, Davaar; a series of Canadian stamps issued from 1980; Postcards showing erupting volcanoes around the world; a Postal history of Holytown; and Correspondence relating to a surge of cholera – the panic at its rise and then the eventual demise.

These were displayed by - Ken Liddell, Ed Archer, Maureen Mathieson and Terry Woods.

David Brown gave warm thanks to all the members who had presented a display – and gave a most interesting meeting.

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 5th January 2024, at 1:30pm when members of the Committee will endeavour to "entertain" the audience.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
