"Members' Night"

 

"8 sheets or 50p"

 

Following a successful auction 12 members displayed their "8 Sheets" & we were treated to some very diverse material.

 

Alex Green opened with issues of Italy dating through the late 1950s & early 1960s;

Alex Magowan followed with material relating Alexander Hamilton;

Walter Simpson then to us to the orient; China to be precise with selected issues from the 1940s through to the 1990s;

Bob Forrest showed us some "Historic Events on First Day Covers" including the last sailing of both the Queen Mary & Queen Elizabeth, Brexit, return of Hong Kong to Chinese control;

David Brown surprised us all with sets of cigarette cards depicting Vintage Cars & Beautiful Scotland;

Graham U'ren showed us the 1966 "British Birds" issue in all its "glory" including most, if not all, the missing colours, colour shifts (some catalogued, some not) including to rare missing colours on cover;

Margaret Lyth took us to Arran & showed early correspondence between the Duke of Hamilton's Estate factor (at Brodick) & the Duke of Hamilton (at Chatelherault, Hamilton);

Ellen McLuckie gave us Nobel prize winners Including Nelson Mandela, Barak Obama, Mother Theresa, Ernest Rutherford & Alexander Fleming;

Ken Norris showed us the story of HMS Belfast;

Brian Dow gave us forgeries of UK First Class stamps including some which had "made it through the system"....& one which didn't!;

Sheila Sinclair gave us a trip to Yellowstone National Park including a glimpse of "Old Faithful"

& finally;

Gordon Shepherd gave us a trip on the Isle of Mull narrow gauge railway which, until recently ran between Craignure & Torosay Castle.

 

President, Brian Dow, thank all members who had contributed as well as thanking all who had assisted in ensuring the auction ran smoothly.

 

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is Friday, 8th April & is our AGM (which is open to members only) & is our final meeting of this session.
