"Presidents' Night"
"Superlatives"
On Friday evening, after his installation as the new President of the recently restarted meetings of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society, Dr Brian Dow of Carluke introduced a short display of ‘Superlatives’.
With this title, he gave a fascinating display of views of - "the Highest, Northernmost, Southernmost, First, Oldest, Earliest, Last, Deepest, Smallest, Longest, and Best Loved".
These included - Highest Railway in Britain – Snowdon; Northernmost Post Office in world – Alesund; Southernmost Post Office in world – Lockroy; Northernmost Post Office in Britain – Haroldswick; Northernmost point on Scottish mainland – Dunnet Head- Southernmost point – Drummore; Westernmost point – Ardnamurchan;
First flight from Scotland to Norway; Highest Post Box in Scotland – Aonach Mor; Oldest Post Office in Scotland – Sanquhar; the world’s First Post Office Tram – Blackpool; First man on the Moon; Longest rail station name in Britain – in Wales! Highest Football Score – Arbroath 36 Bon Accord 0 (in 1885); the Best Loved Whisky – Famous Grouse!
There were many other interesting facts to view!
Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday 5th November, 2021, at 7:30pm, when Mrs Ellen Currie will present her display of "A Scottish Alphabet".
Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
