"New Zealand"

Dr. David Stalker

It was an amazing display of 4 ‘themes’ – all of one country – at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society meeting on Friday evening (21st September). The country was New Zealand – and the display was presented by Dr David Stalker of the Caledonian Philatelic Society, Glasgow.

He began with "Rugby" – and showed the first stamps issued which illustrated the theme - the 1967 Health stamps - these depicted a young boy with the rugby ball – behind him is the shadow of an "All Black". The display continued with stamps, covers, miniature sheets issued for various anniversaries and events in the New Zealand Rugby calendar through the years – including, in 1991 – the World Cup; in 1996 the U-Bix Rugby Super 12; in 2004 – Rugby 7s; and in 2010 – stamps commemorating 100 years of Maori Rugby – and also this same year stamps honouring the "All Blacks".

The second theme was "Yachting" – and again the first stamps to illustrate the theme were the Health Stamps – these issued in 1951 and featuring some racing yachts. Further stamps and covers issued through the years featured Cup challenges. In 1971 the "One Ton Cup" Challenge in Hauraki Gulf, Auckland was featured on 2 stamps – one illustrating the Cup which has now totally disappeared. Other issues feature Classic Yacht Races and many stamps, miniature sheets and covers illustrated the "America Cup" – especially when New Zealand won - including 2017 – Winners in Bermuda. Other stamps illustrated the Southern Cross Cup, the Admiral’s Cup and the Kenwood Cup.

The next theme had many members clustering round one Miniature sheet as they tried to find out under which Chinese New Year animal they were born! The display – "The Chinese New Year Celebrated by New Zealand Post" presented stamps and miniature sheets issued through the years from 1997 to 2008. 1997 – Year of the Ox – and through Tiger; Rabbit; Dragon; Snake; Horse; Ram; Monkey; Rooster; Dog; Pig and 2008 Year of the Rat. These were further illustrated by stamps issued to relate to the theme.

The Final Round displayed the lovely "Circular Kiwi" series of stamps. These show the 5 different species of kiwi – Brown Kiwi; Great Spotted Kiwi; Little Spotted Kiwi; Tokoeka Kiwi and Rowi Kiwi. The differing colours used through the years were viewed – and also some covers issued. The cover issued on 31st December, 1999 showed the circular stamp within a square bordered by the setting sun’s rays – so marking the Millennium. In 2018 – to commemorate 30 years – the stamps were "refreshed" with bright colours.

Mike Cleary led members in giving warm thanks to David Stalker for presenting, through the 4 themes, such a fascinating display of New Zealand.

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 5th October, 2018, at 7:30pm when members look forward to welcoming visitors from the Dundee Philatelic Society.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
