"Members' Night"

 

"Superlatives"

 

 

The - Highest, Northernmost, Southernmost, First, Oldest, Earliest, Last, Deepest, Smallest, Longest & Maiden Voyage; – this brought out a wonderful presentation of stamps, meter marks, miniature sheets, postcards at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society last Friday, 2nd February. 

The theme for the evening was ‘Superlatives’, and the members responded magnificently.

 

These included - from

Highest:- Mountains; Distillery; 

Northernmost and, also, Southernmost:– Post Offices; 

First:- Lighthouse, President, Man on Moon, Transatlantic crossing, Flights to Scottish Islands, Scottish regional stamps, Floating Post Office; 

Oldest:-  Lighthouses; 

Earliest:- Postal Censor Mark, Rugby World Cup and Rugby Union Stamp issues; 

Deepest:–  Lake; 

Last:– Last day of stamp issue;

Smallest:– Distillery; 

Longest:– Set of 134 definitive stamps from Cilicia.

 

These were displayed by Brian Dow, Sheila Sinclair, Bob Bradley, Alex Magowan, Margaret Lyth and Ken Norris.

 

Other ‘Superlative’ displays were viewed:

Albert Tong – Stamps showing British Kings and Queens and the Crown Jewels;

Derek Wiltshire – Stamps issued in Zanzibar under British rule;

Terry Woods – the Postal History of Leadhills – covers with meter marks through the years;

Walter Tytherleigh – Postcards showing athletes involved in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin;

Paul McGowan – Stamps, miniature sheets of Paintings by Rembrandt

&

Alex Grimson – Covers issued by World Wildlife Fund showing animals, birds, fish – from many countries

 

Margaret Lyth led members in giving warm thanks to all who had displayed and pronounced it all "a truly wonderful evening". Thanks were also expressed to Dr Ken Liddell who organised the evening.

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 16th February, 2018, at 7:30pm when members of the Crossford Stamp Group will give their displays of Historic Clydesdale. 

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
