"8 sheets or 50p"
There was a very small pile of 50p pieces on the table at the Meeting of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society last Friday (31st March) as members preferred to give an 8 page display rather than pay the fine!
There was a wonderful variety of displays:-
Paul
McGowan showed Poster stamps of the Netherlands – including - Health and
Safety
& Exhibitions;
Gordon
Shepherd travelled along the Fort William to Mallaig Railway
and gave historic postcard views;
Beate
Sim was remembering 1973 with her display of British stamps issued that year;
Bill
Jardine presented Covers and Stamps of the island of Montserrat in the British
West Indies;
Albert
Tong reminded all of the different Chinese New Year stamps – issued from 1997
to 2008;
Ellen
Currie was Mapping the Planet – and displayed stamps and covers showing maps
of various countries;
Raymond
Baldock remembering the Allied Military Post in Germany during the Allied
Occupation;
Anne
Holmes reminded all of the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 with the aid of Stamps
and Covers;
Elsie
Miller told the story of Henri Dunant, Founder of the Red Cross, with stamps and
covers;
Frank
Jardine excited many with his display of the World Cup through the years – on
stamps and covers;
Ellen McLuckie displayed stamps from around the world showing the active lives of children.
Sheila
Sinclair interested viewers with her display of Covers and Stamps from Ascension
Island, South
Atlantic;
Bob
Bradford showed the development of the First Airmail stamp issue of
Czechoslovakia – design to print;
David
Brown displayed historic views of the Island of Iona;
Chris
Moffat showed GB commemorative stamps from
1924 (Empire Exhibition) to 1948 (Olympic Games);
Jim
Fulton interested many with USA stamps issued during the Invasion of Greece in
1941;
Jessie
Henderson gave a miscellaneous display of postcards showing various places she
had visited
Bob
Forrest humorously described how he learnt to collect and display stamps
correctly;
Derek
Wiltshire showed Stamp issues of St Christopher Nevis and Anguilla, West Indies;
Alex
Magowan fascinated all by displaying Freemen of Hamilton – including Harry
Lauder
& W.E.Gladstone;
Margaret
Lyth showed beautiful views of the island of Arran;
Terry
Woods displayed covers with the slogan postmark of Motherwell showing the Towers
of Ravenscraig;
Maureen
Mathieson had lovely postcards of Butterflies On the Wing – with perforated
wings to push out;
Eric
Ross looked at Waterfalls around the World – lovely illustrations on stamps;
Walter Tytherleigh – interesting display of stamps issued by Germany in 1945 – before final defeat.
John
Aitken interested many with his display of historic postcards of Calder Park in
Motherwell;
Robin
Wishart picked up on a variety of errors on stamps showing Steam Railway Engines;
Brian
Dow displayed a number of items addressed wrongly to himself – but delivered
by Royal Mail!;
Ken
Norris gave a fascinating display of stamps and postmarks illustrating a
magnifying glass;
Frank Jardine reminded all of the Titanic - stamps, covers, and cuttings – one showing the youngest survivor

Haig displayed all the stamp issues of Germany 2016 – Definitives –
Commemoratives etc
Our President, Ray Baldock, thanked members for giving such a wonderfully diverse display.
This meeting concludes the Session of 2016-2017.
We shall resume on Friday, 1st September, 2017 in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton at 7:30pm.
We
will welcome anyone who has an interest in stamps, postal history or postcards.
