Lanarkshire Philatelic Society
"Members' Night"
Christmas Dinner
The
theme for the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society’s meeting on Friday was of
topical interest – ‘Christmas Dinner’ - and this was interpreted by
stamps, postcards, meter marks - in various ways!
Murray
Touche displayed Chefs – and also suggested Bird, Meat and Fish dishes for the
Main Course followed by some delicious desserts;
Maureen
Mathieson showed a decorative and beautifully arranged dinner table – and also
gave the menu.
She
suggested an after dinner Sing-Song;
Raymond
Baldock had a collection of skillfully embroidered cards sent to families during
World War 1;
Ellen
Currie spelt out ‘CHRISTMAS DINNER’ with stamps illustrating each letter –
Candles/Holly/Robins/ Inn/Santa/Tree/Manger/Angels/Snow - etc;
Margaret
Lyth gave a bit of play on the names of politicians as she told the story of
‘Wee Maggie’s Christmas Pudding’;
Elsie
Miller felt there would be time for some Carol singing after the Dinner and
displayed stamps of carols – beginning with ‘Jingle Bells’;
Ken
Liddell was ‘Dining Out for Christmas’.
He recommended, and illustrated, some Restaurants where good food was
offered.
Ken
Norris displayed a collection of covers bearing ‘Christmas Local Post’
stamps from Lanarkshire –
Alan
Wishart also spelt out ‘CHRISTMAS DINNER’ – with stamps illustrating each
letter.
There
were other displays;
Paul
McGowan took viewers on railway journeys around Ireland – when steam engines
were in vogue!;
Terry Woods displayed mail sent from Larkhall and showed various postmarks from time past,
&
Alan Wishart showed mail posted from the Philatelic Congress in Perth each bearing the current ‘Post and Go’ stamps for the years from 2012 – 2017.
Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 5th January, 2018, at 7:30pm when Committee members will attempt to ‘Entertain’ all with their displays.
Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
We wish everyone, everywhere a very Merry Christmas.
