The Committee "Entertain"
On
Friday, 6th January, the Committee members of the Lanarkshire
Philatelic Society very suitably entertained all with displays on a great
variety of subjects.
Paul
McGowan opened proceedings with a series of ‘Netherlands Stamps and Covers;
also Express Letters’
Duncan
McIntyre with covers and postmarks showed how mail was delivered by the American
Zeppelin
Anne
Holmes displayed Australian First Day Covers – including - Royal Visit 1954;
Olympic Games 1955 etc
Alan
Wishart remembered his time at Glasgow University with postcards of both the
interior and exterior
Ken
Norris was at the north of Scotland with postcards and postmarks (including
1901) of John O’Groats
Elsie
Miller showed stamps, postmarks and miniature sheets of Agatha Christie –
including the ‘Mousetrap’
Sheila
Sinclair, with postcards gave an interesting history of the Mormon Church in
Utah and Salt Lake City
Terry
Woods gave a detailed postal history with postmarks from Stonehouse –
beginning from 1835
David
Haig had a most interesting display of Stamp booklets issued by South Africa
Brian
Dow displayed all the stamps issued by Norway in 2016 – also First day Covers
Raymond
Baldock had a collection of postcards and postmarks of the German Mail
‘Feldpost’ - World War 1
Gary
Cheyne – also WW1 – Stamps, slogans, propaganda postcards encouraging the
purchase of War Bonds
Margaret
Lyth presented a great miscellany of humorous postcards
Ken
Liddell illustrated Simon and Garfunkel’s song ‘America’ – with
‘tongue-in-cheek’ postcards!
President
Raymond Baldock led members in giving warm thanks to all committee members for
giving such interesting displays on a great variety of subjects.
Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 20th January, 2017, at 7:30pm when LPS member Gordon Shepherd will present ‘World War 1 in German East Africa’.
Anyone
with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to
attend.
