"Members' Night"

 

L.P.S. at 50!

 

 

This Session of 2016/17 is the 50th year of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society – and to mark this members were given the theme of the letters of L.P.S. 50 and asked to use all or some of these in a display. 

Some 18 members responded to the call and gave a wonderful variety of displays.

Brian Dow showed Lanarkshire Post Offices and their postmarks  – including Larkhall; Pettinain & Shotts

Alan Rushworth had postcards of Clyde Steamers – including  "Lord of the Isles"; "Pioneer"& "Suilven"

Raymond Baldock chose the letter ‘L’ – and showed stamps of Latvia

Margaret Lyth displayed postcards of paintings by Leonardo (da Vinci); Salvador Dali & Picasso

Paul McGowan presented Netherlands Airmails of the 1940 that had been sent "Per Luchtpost"

Ken Liddell amused all with his collection of – LPs!  -"Best Selling Albums" - and later, Cassettes and DVDs

Eric Ross was sporty – stamps of Mountains - letter ‘S’; Ski-ing; Slalom; Sledging; Ski-jumping & Ski-downhill

Walter Tytherleigh displayed postcards relating to WW2 – at Scapa Flow; German Ship and Submarine

Terry Woods displayed the Postal History of ‘Lesmahago’ – ‘Lesmahagow’ – with many postmarks

Bob Bradford chose the letter ‘P’ - displayed Provisional stamp use in Czechoslovakia in the Hradčany period

Sheila Sinclair – Member of the LPS for 48 years – gave a history of the LPS – telling of various meeting places; special events and showed covers for these, including one issued by the LPS for the Motherwell Mod in 1983

Ken Norris – also spoke of LPS events and showed covers issued by the LPS for the occasions it has hosted the Scottish Congress; photographs of the 21st and 25th Anniversaries of the LPS and for its 500th Meeting.

Mike Cleary also chose ‘P’ - displayed stamps from the Pitcairn Islands – including the Mutiny of the Bounty

Alan Wishart – used ‘Post and Go’ machines at Congress, Stampex and World Stamp Show NY 2016-10-02

Derek Wiltshire in Lanarkshire – with historic postcards of Wishaw, Cambusnethan Priory & Garrion Bridge

Maureen Mathieson displayed Lepidoptery – stamps and covers showing some South American Butterflies

Albert Tong – chose the letter ‘S’ and stamps issued for National Day (9th Aug); and for National Service Day

Alex Magowan chose ‘50’ and showed stamps issued by Canada 50 years ago – 1967

Raymond Baldock, President, gave thanks to all who had displayed and to Bill McCririck who sponsored the evening.  

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 7th October, 2016, at 7:30pm when members look forward to welcoming visitors from Dumfries Philatelic Society.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
