An amazing variety of subjects were viewed at the meeting of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society last Friday evening – 22nd April.  This was the occasion when members were asked to "Display 8 pages or pay 50p"!

The Displays – of  stamps, covers, meter marks, postcards - were set off by;

Mike Cleary – Shackleton’s Antarctic Expedition and the subsequent rescue of his crew from Elephant Island

Murray Touche – Nobel Prize Winners through the years as displayed on stamps

Frank Jardine – World Cup 1954 and 1962 and also a series of Covers signed by Stanley Matthews and Team

Chris Moffat – Decimalisation in Malawi – 15:2:71 Change from Malawian Pound to Tambala and Kwacha

Elsie Miller – new additions to Children’s Literature – including Mr Men, Man of Steel, Maigret, Jules Verne

Duncan McIntyre – Covers of Mail sent by Zeppelin from the USA – 1926-1937

Walter Tytherleigh -  the Weimar Republic during WW1 – (the official designation of German State 1919-33)

Sheila Sinclair – Virginia, USA – has produced 8 Presidents of USA - stamps illustrating all 8

Jim Grassom – Covers via Air Mail 1926-1928: Postal Stationery with Forth Road Bridge meter marks  4:9:64

Eric Ross – Scenic views of all areas of Austria as shown on Stamps

 

Maureen Mathieson – Operation Overlord Embroidery Panels with material from battle dress, parachute etc

Bob Bradford – American War of Independence – stamps showing various aspects of the war

David Brown – covers issued by the London Philatelic Exhibition over many years;   Historic Burnside

Gordon Shepherd – Cecil Rhodes; Rhodesia; Northern and Southern Rhodesia; Rhodesia and Nyasaland

Robin Wishart – Covers issued for Anniversaries relating to Locomotives; Trams; Ships

Jim Fulton – Deprivations of Hungarian Army in Russia; Civil War stamp issues from Spain 1936-1939

Terry Woods – Postal History of Leadhills and Wanlockhead; – postcards showing Post Offices

Alex Magowan – New Zealand covers relating to the filming of  ‘The Hobbit’

Margaret Lyth – Covers relating various anniversaries of the Queen

Andy Napier -  Mail to and from the Leprosy Hospital on Makogai Island (NE of Suva, Fiji) 1911-1970

Derek Wiltshire – Postcards (and postmarks) illustrating life on Zanzibar

Gary Cheyne led members in a warm Vote of Thanks given to all who had displayed with such a wonderful variety of themes.

This meeting concludes the Session of 2015-2016. We shall resume on Friday, 2nd September, 2016 in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton at 7:30pm. 

We will give a warm welcome to all who have an interest in stamps, postal history or postcards.
