Lanarkshire Philatelic Society
"Members' Night"
European Islands
"European
Islands"
was the theme given to members of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society on Friday
evening – 9th October
- and some 14 members made visits to a
great
variety of islands around the world.
Stamps,
covers, meter marks, miniature sheets and postcards illustrated different
aspects of the islands – Paul McGowan started off with a visit to islands on
the west coast of the Netherlands.
Mike Cleary travelled north to the Faroes and displayed stamps issues of
1975 to 2004. Albert
Tong went south to Malta and showed various stamp issues of between the years
1949 – 1970. Ken
Liddell, with postcards, showed how William Reid of Riccarton, Kilmarnock built
and opened Reid’s Palace Hotel on Madeira.
Ellen Currie and Ray Baldock stayed closer to home on the Isle of Man and
on Cumbrae – Ellen displayed many illustrations of the map of the Isle of Man
while Ray gave many historical views of Millport and environs.
In
the second round Terry Woods was sending Registered Mail and the labels included
those from Mull and Tiree whilst Derek Wiltshire was south in Jersey with stamps
of beautiful Flora of the world. Brian
Dow was north in the Norwegian islands with covers from Spitzbergen, Jan Mayen
Island and Svalbard; then
a journey south to the Greek Islands – Jim Fulton visited the Ionian Islands
– with stamp issues from Kerkyra; Paxios; Lefkada; Kefallonia; Ithaki &
Zakynthos. A
return to Britain and Ken Norris displayed many stamps and covers of the
Mountain Railway up Snaefell and other Miniature Railways on the Isle of Man –
and Maureen Mathieson displayed stamp issues and covers from Jersey and also
postcard views from the Isle of Arran.
The
Vote of Thanks was given by Brian Dow, who thanked all who had given such a
wonderful variety of displays.
Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 6th November, 2015, at 7:30pm when members look forward to welcoming visitors from the Caledonian Philatelic Society of Glasgow.
