"The Committee Entertain"

 

There was a wonderful variety of displays given at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society on Friday night (9th Jan) when "The Committee Entertains" the members.

George Jamieson set off the evening with his display of "Aspects of Chemistry" and showed many stamps honouring Chemists and Physicists – with an explanatory note about each;

Margaret Lyth paid tribute to the people of Arran with Postcards of the island during- and after - World War 1;

Ellen Currie showed Art Masterpieces in Miniature – many famous works of Art reproduced on stamps;

Alan Wishart looked at buildings and monuments – by postcards – on the Battlefield of Waterloo;

Robin Wishart delights in all types of buses and steam engines and collects many postcards and labels;

Gary Cheyne displayed stamps issued by Croatia during World War 2 – 1941-1943;

Paul McGowan – "a bit of propaganda" – stamps issued by Libya during Colonel Gadaffi’s regime 1972-1985;

Ken Norris – a step back in time – to "Victorian Britain" – Stamps, covers, postcards illustrating Victorian life.

 

After a break;

Andy Napier showed some fascinating items of Fiji Postal History including a cover from a letter sent to President Nelson Mandela;

Elsie Miller enjoyed the story of Alice in Wonderland – as shown on the new issue of stamps from the UK;

Brian Dow displayed interesting postcard views published by Dewar’s Whisky;

David Haig completed his display of stamp issued of Germany – for the latter half of 2013;

Sheila Sinclair reminded all of days of yore when many watched films of "Cowboys and Indians" (Native Americans) with some interesting postcards;

Raymond Baldock displayed World War 1 postcards sent from France;

Ken Liddell showed postcards of the Art work of Scottish Colourists – Peploe, Cadell, Hunter, Fergusson;

Anne Holmes loves cats – big ones – and displayed stamps, covers and postcards of lions and tigers.

 

Gordon Shepherd gave thanks to all the committee members who had given such an interesting variety of displays.

 

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 23rd January, 2015, at 7:30pm when Andy Napier will give a display on "Fiji".

 

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
