Lanarkshire Philatelic Society

"Members' Night"

"Africa"

"Africa" – this one word was the theme challenging members of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society – and on Friday (10th October) those who responded gave thoughtful displays of many different countries and aspects of the continent.

Stamps, miniature sheets, postmarks and postcards gave a most interesting view of countries which have now disappeared or been renamed - usually owing either to war or to independence  - these included, Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Spanish Guinea, Spanish Morocco, Spanish Sahara, Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia, South West Africa, German East Africa, (this included postcards outlining the occupation by the British and Belgian troops during the First World War), There also were  displays from other African countries which still retain their name - Ethiopia, Egypt and South Africa.

There were displays – of Flowers and Fauna of Malawi; and of South Africa Rugby Union – and ball! From various members – colourful displays of Sea Shells; Lighthouses; Moths and  Mountains – of Africa. There was a delightful display of Christmas stamps from Ghana, Uganda, Lesotho, Gabon and Sierra Leone.

A wonderful mixture of material displayed by; - Gordon Shepherd, Jim Fulton, Alex Magowan, Albert Tong, Sheila Sinclair, Gary Cheyne, Derek Wiltshire, Murray Touche, Bill Jardine, David Haig, Margaret Allan, Chris Moffat, Ken Mathieson, Maureen Mathieson and Eric Ross.

Bill Wilkie led Members in giving thanks for such variable and interesting displays and thanks also given to David Haig who organised the evening.

Our next meeting in the Caledonian Bowling Club, Motherwell Road, Hamilton, is on Friday, 7th November, at 7:30pm  when members look forward to welcoming Mrs. Margaret Morris, who will display "Time".

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc is very welcome to attend.
