"President's Evening"

Margaret Lyth

‘Margaret’s Miscellany’ – this was the title of the Display given at the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society at its opening meeting on Friday, 5th September – and it certainly lived up to its name!

The new President, Miss Margaret Lyth, began with Miniature sheets of stamps for each of the four countries of the UK. Postcards depicting old calendars; invoices with fiscal stamps signed over when payment was made; a bisected stamp – representing ˝d; the first Scottish aerogramme; telegrams; ships’ cachets; slogan postmarks; decimal definitives; notice of damaged mail; surcharge notices; a newspaper notice of a meeting to be held on 1st September, 1967 in the Unionist Rooms, Quarry Street, Hamilton – to form a Club for those interested in Stamp Collecting; along with a cover marking the 700th meeting of the Lanarkshire Philatelic Society on 28th November, 2006 – and much more!

In the second half of the evening Margaret continued her miscellany theme with a display of covers, stamps, postmark, postcards – connected with Royalty; literature; music; art; sport; travel; science; religion; United Nations and natural history.

In proposing the Vote of Thanks, the immediate past President, Mrs Ellen Currie, praised Margaret for giving us such a wonderfully varied display on our first evening.

Our next meeting in St Andrews Parish Church Hall, Avon Street, Hamilton, is on Friday, 19thSeptember, 2008, at 7:30pm when we look forward to visit from members of Paisley Philatelic Society.

Anyone with an interest in stamps, postal history, postcards etc will be very welcome to attend.
